AcornStory — Chaos Brings PvP to MapleStory!

The Chaos update has brought and is bringing a lot of changes to Maple World, the most significant of which is the introduction of PvP gameplay. In this edition of AcornStory, we’ll introduce you to the concepts of PvP, how they’re implemented in MapleStory, and how you can get started in the exciting world of hero versus hero competition.

PvP vs. PvE

Massively multiplayer online games are traditionally divided into two distinct styles of gameplay: Player vs. Environment [PvE] and Player vs. Player [PvP]. While some games may contain both, each type of gameplay offers a distinct experience. The way your character’s powers and items work, indeed the very rules of the world itself may change drastically when you cross over from one type of gameplay to the other. It’s extremely important then, to understand what these two styles are and how they differ.

PvE

The “Player vs. Environment” experience is what most people think of when they think of an MMO. During PvE, players take on monsters and obstacles managed by the computer. Any character directly controlled by a computer is called an “NPC” or “Non-Player Character.” PvE gameplay usually consists of player characters battling against NPCs, rather than against each other, though there may be limited exceptions. Sometimes, for example, a PvE encounter requires two teams of players to compete against one another for a prize. In general though, the key characteristic for PvE is that players fight NPCs.

PvP

PvP, or “Player vs. Player,” is a completely different experience. During PvP, players can use their powers, weapons, and abilities to directly attack one another. As with a PvE monster, these attacks will cause damage and should your character’s HP fall to zero, your character will die. Various PvP scenarios are possible. Sometimes PvP gameplay is combined with PvE obstacles or other gameplay dynamics, but the defining element of a PvP scenario is that players fight each other.

Getting started

https://i1.wp.com/nxcache.nexon.net/spotlight/113/00CVQ-6fb3a077-ac49-4668-94ac-7b3c9739c7e3.PNG

To begin a PvP session, your character must be level 30 or above. You can then find NPC Maximus in any major town and do the following:

• Speak with Maximus to be teleported to Battle Square.

• Once in Battle Square, speak with NPC Crawson. This will bring up the Battle Mode window. This window allows you to select what type of PvP game you wish to play and what tier you wish to play in.

• Click the START button. The game will search for opponents and then bring you both into a PvP match.

Battle Mode Tiers

Battle Mode “tiers” segregate players by level, in order to keep matches fair. There’s no way a level 30 Mage, for example, could possibly fight a level 175 Aran. The differences in power and equipment would make the fight too one-sided. By restricting players to certain tiers, we make sure that everyone has the chance to compete on a fairly level playing field.

Note: Players above the level limit for a tier are allowed to compete in the lower tier except for the Rookie tier, but certain skills will be blocked from use and the effects of certain items will be reduced.

Tiers

• Rookie: The Rookie tier is available for Maplers between level 30 and level 69. Players can use any first or second job advancement skills. Evan characters can use up to 5th growth stage skills. Dual Blade characters can use up to 3rd level skills.

• Gladiator: The Gladiator tier is available for all Maplers above level 70. Players can use any first, second or third job advancement skills. Evan characters can use up to 8th growth stage skills. Dual Blade characteres can use up to 3rd+ level skills.

• Veteran: The Veteran tier is available for all Maplers above level 120. All skills can be used. Item and equipment effects may be reduced for balance purposes.

• Legend: The Legend tier is available for all Maplers above level 180. All skills can be used. Items and equipment give their full effects in this tier. However, no Battle Mode potions will drop in this mode.

Battle Mode Games

Once you have selected your tier, you can choose from two types of PvP games: Free-for-all and Team Mode.

Free-for-all

https://i0.wp.com/nxcache.nexon.net/spotlight/113/00CVQ-ecfffa14-7bdf-4901-bd17-1d00e1299b7b.png
Free-for-all is a no-holds-barred battle to the finish. Everyone you see on the battlefield is the enemy. Simply fight until time runs out!

• All players’ scores will be displayed in a box in the upper-right corner of the screen.

• Everyone is a winner in this mode! After the game is over, everyone will be awarded Battle Points and Battle EXP based on their overall score. The higher your score, the bigger your reward!

Team Mode

https://i1.wp.com/nxcache.nexon.net/spotlight/113/00CVQ-9c33a3da-865f-4e21-ab42-7cb86547dcce.png
In Team Mode, players will be separated into “Red” and “Blue” teams. The object is to defeat members of the opposing team. The team that defeats the most members of the opposing team is the winner!

• The collected team scores are shown next to the timer.

• Individual scores and rankings are shown in a window in the upper right.

• Each team member’s health is also displayed. Use this to assist one another.

• Each player is awarded Battle Points and Battle EXP based on their individual scores with a bonus for the winning team.

Battle Mode Gameplay

While fighting against other players, you’ll note a number of gameplay differences from normal PvE.

https://i2.wp.com/nxcache.nexon.net/spotlight/113/00CVQ-880a3c7a-9810-44e2-b4a1-549ef7a18519.PNG

• There is no lasting negative to being killed in PvP.  Within 3 seconds you will be revived in a safe area where you are free to reenter the battle.

• Consumable items such as potions and foods cannot be used. During the game though, special Battle Mode potions will randomly pop up on the battlefield. The effects of these items will begin as soon as a player picks them up.

• Every once in a while, the player with the highest score will be named “Champion” and a star will appear above his or her head.
o Players who defeat the Champion in one minute or less will receive extra Battle EXP and Battle Points.
o Champions who survive for more than one minute will also receive bonuses.
o If the Champion is killed five times, he or she will be revived with a “Rage” buff that raises their Attack and Defense rating for two minutes.

PvP Rewards

Battle Experience

Battle Experience Points are granted at the end of a PvP battle. Like regular experience, Battle Experience accumulates and periodically contributes to a rise in your Battle Rank. Battle Rank offers a variety of benefits and is completely separate from your character’s level.

Battle Points

Battle Points are exchanged for Gallant Emblems through the BP Exchanger in Battle Square. You can use Gallant Emblems to purchase exclusive items from Larson, another NPC in Battle Square.

https://i1.wp.com/nxcache.nexon.net/spotlight/113/00CVQ-c55cc79f-0e6b-44cb-bbb5-078aa60fa560.PNG

These items include a variety of accessories as well as a Mystery Scroll that turns into a random scroll when you use it and a Mystery Recipe that turns into a random crafting recipe when you use it. Gallant Emblems are also used as ingredients for some crafting recipes.

Battlefield Wisdom

There are two important concepts to understand about MapleStory PvP as you get started: First, it’s voluntary, and second, you should expect the unexpected.

Voluntary PvP

Unlike other games that have so-called “open PvP” worlds, PvP in MapleStory is completely voluntary. The majority of Maple World is a PvE environment where players cannot attack one another, so there’s never any need to worry about getting involved in PvP without warning. You can only start a PvP session by speaking with NPC Crawson.

Expect the Unexpected

Your first few PvP sessions may come as a bit of a shock if you’re not used to this mode, but the most effective way to get acclimatized to PvP is to expect the unexpected.

• Fighting players is nothing like fighting monsters. Players will move in unpredictable patterns. If they’re damaged, they may retreat to heal up and attack again. They may be working with partners who will heal and support them.

• Players are just as smart and powerful as you are. If you’re used to taking on monsters that get by with one or two attacks, it can be a little intimidating to face off against an enemy that has as many powers as you do and knows how to use them.

• PvP is faster than PvE. Very often the victor in a PvP match is the one who keeps the coolest head, uses their powers properly, and takes advantage of mistakes made by their opponent. Don’t be surprised or discouraged if you lose your first few PvP matches.

Update Q&A

[18:07] First question is: what is equipment explosion?
[18:07] Answer: We have made some changes to Golden Temple that have increased the drop rate for Timeless, Reverse, and Maple weapons from mobs in the temple.
[18:08] The drop rate will be higher than it has ever been for any mobs in Maple history!

[18:10] Second question is: And when is NOVA server coming out!? I can’t wait! :(
[18:11] Answer for the second question: With the Age of Battle update! Woohoo! :)

[18:11] Question: About PVP, are there any balancing issues? Because I heard from KMS players dual bladers are unbalanced in the PVP aspect and its unbalanced for other jobs such as Evan, with a very low attacking speed.
[18:11] Answer: We are actually receiving an updated version of PvP than what was first released in KMS.  Our version includes balance updates that came out after PvP’s initial release.

[18:13] Question: Dear Nexon i would like to know if this new pvp intergrated system will ensure LEVEL BRACKET SYSTEM so that level 75 players are not going up against level 155 etc.
[18:14] Answer: Yes, the system is broken up based on level.

[18:14] Question: I noticed that Gallant Emblemrs are tools that are used in the making of Shoulderpads and etc. Will there be alternative ways in getting Gallant Emblems?
[18:14] Answer: The only way to get Gallant Emblems at this time is to trade in Battle Points from PvP.

[18:26] Question: What rewards will PvP give?
[18:26] Answer: You earn Battle Points, which cant be exchanged for Gallant Emblems.  These can then be traded in for various accessories, scrolls, and recipes, or used when crafting some items.

[18:28] Question: Are there any restrictions on when and how often you can PvP?
[18:28] Answer: No, you can particiapte in PvP as much as you want 24 hours a day. :)

[18:30] Question: Is there a ranking system for PvP? If not are there plans to make one in the future?
[18:31] Answer: There is a simple system now. You can see others’ rank by viewing their character info. We might consider expanding this feature in the future.

[18:44] Answer: Your equipment will have an impact, players invest a lot of time into getting great gear and that will still be important, however, to ensure that PvP is fun for as many people as possible, the impact of your equipment will not be overwhelming. If can help, but a better player in slightly lower gear will still win most of the time.

[18:45] Question:  Who do you think will be the best and popular character for PVP?
[18:45] Answer: There are lots of player opinions on this as well as differing opinions on the Maple Team.  What we’ve found is that there is no single answer to this, due to differing levels of skill and styles of play.

  1. knew golden temple was coming, cause of the quests in there since BB …. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY GODLY TRAINING !! what do you think zach 😉

  2. Dragon Nest’s site is updated. AND ITS SMEXY.
    http://dragonnest.nexon.net

    • It looks pretty nice :). It’ll likely be changed to the general format of the other Nexon game websites during open beta/official launch though.

  3. msupdate :
I’ll comment on this after I find out what “Equipment Explosion” is. I’m thinking it’s just a higher drop rate of equips.

kay, what you think now ?

  4. msupdate :
Golden Temple with its epic EXP rewards and now with highly boosted drop rates? Sounds super to me.

exp REWARDS ??? do you get rewards .. or do ya just mean good exp… fast question, do you think temple is better for my lv 81 evan .. i need to get him to 97 for the glasses, and I’m going on vacation for 1 week this friday … or should I go to mp3, since alot of ppl won’t be awake after patch, or are going to check out PvP … or should I try PvP ..
plz answer before the patch is over xD

    • When I say EXP rewards I mean EXP rewarded from defeating a monster. You should probably stick with MP3 because of the high spawn rates, but I really have no idea.

kay thanks, 4 PM here, waiting for the patch to be over, cause I have been waiting for like almost the whole day. Went to work (not for working but to ask my week off so I could go on vacantion with my dad and my lil bro) and ate a nice MCmuffin…. Oooh and I forgot, how did the finals go for ur bro ? I had a nice graduation … 😉

  6. msupdate :
He said they were pretty good . Good luck on vacation.

Oooh good 😉 and thanks. Sadly it will be boring as HELLLLLLLLL.
1 week no internet, no maple, me being in stress if I will be able to get my evan to 97 in time.

  7. msupdate :
Poor robbin. If you don’t make it to 97 can’t you just ask your brother to help out?

Hes with me on vacation … and he wants to train his cleric on windia (he started this week on windia, we share the same account), and asks me to train it, but I NEED to get my Evan to 97. I don’t care about the DB mask anymore, I can just make a mask with proffesion, but getting glasses is impossible

  8. Hey! my 1st time on ur blog! its pretty coo (im on actually) i want to finish the quest and get some Gallant Emblemms lol

  9. msupdate :
Everyone lags. I lag A LOT but still find PvP extremely fun. Maybe it’s because I’m a Mech so lag or not I still get lots of points. It’s due to the server load. Try battling during off-times such as between 10:00PM and 7:00AM Pacific or right after a maintenance.

    hehe noob mech xD
    whats your lvl zach ?
I play on my CB, and I got an amazing 2k points !!
I was playing FFA on the golden pig map, everyone went to the left platform, all stand in a corner and kill each other, I jump in, place my dark flare to reflect dmg, hit them with BoT, die and repeat all over again, I Freakin’ WON.
1 question, is it normal to have skill delay. Cause my aran can’t play because of it.
If i want to do tripple swing it goes like this :
HIt, 1 second interval, double swing, 1 sec interval, tripple swing. SO DUMB
and once, when I was on my cb, htere was an enemy in front of me, I SPAMMED (yes I smashed my keyboard) ASSUALT (wich was at like CTRL), but nothing happend, then when he ran away and I walked away I suddenly did the animation, is this because of the lagg and will it be over soon, or is it because I live in europe, far away from the server.

Cause when ever I want to loot I loot 1 item at a time, really slow, instead of Americans wich have the pickup speed of a pet 😉

    • It seems that lag is causing a lot of what you described. There’s no delay on looting so that is definitely lag and there is a delay on skills but it shouldn’t take THAT long for a skill to be used after the hotkey is pressed. It’s your fault for being European -F3-.
