[GMS v99] Game Update – Age of Heroes [Chaos 1] + Notes

Who was right? Me! The new world that will come with the first Chaos update will be Chaos, not Nova. Nova will likely come in the second or third update, probably the second. For those people saying things like “Nexon has failed us” and other crap like that, Nexon never said anywhere that Nova would come in the first update.

Update 3: The game update has concluded at 11:00AM Pacific (2:00PM Eastern) and the game is now open. Total update time was 13 hours. However, the new world of Chaos is not yet ready and has not been opened. Nexon will update us when Chaos is ready.

Update 2: The game update has been extended for a further 3 hours and it is now expected to end at 11:00AM Pacific (2:00PM Eastern).

Update: The game update has been extended for another 2 hours and it is now expected to end 8:00AM Pacific (11:00AM Eastern).

MapleStory will be going through a scheduled game update on Tuesday, June 28, 2011. During this period, all game servers will be unavailable. The game update will last approximately 8 hours. Name changes and world transfers will NOT be processed during this maintenance.

* Areas in Dark Ereve and the areas around Henesys Ruins contain giant, mutated versions of low level monsters from the present.
* The Knight Stronghold is packed with Cygnus Knight enemies that have the same skills as Cygnus Knights you can create, but are much more powerful than any Cygnus Knight in the present.
* The Knight Stronghold is filled with party play areas, which will be familiar to many players who have explored Lion King’s Castle before. When defeating enemies in these party play areas, you gain 50% bonus EXP for every extra member you have in your party who are present, up to 250% bonus EXP for a party of six.

Dev. Blog: The Age of Heroes Class Rebalance

There is a steady buzz of activity echoing through the halls here at Nexon as we prepare for what may be our busiest summer ever. As Chaos gets underway, were in the process of preparing new clients, writing long update notes, and finalizing big events. One of our biggest projects at the moment is implementing the upcoming class rebalance in Age of Heroes (the first stage of the Chaos update) and planning even more changes as part of our long term strategy for MapleStory. Making changes to skills and class balance is always complicated. We certainly know how passionately you feel about it, so I thought this would be a good time to talk a bit about the reasoning behind some of the changes youre about to see.

Isolated Class Design

For many years we didnt have to worry about class balance. Since MapleStory had no real competitive elements and hunting space was plentiful, we were able to practice isolated class design: we only needed to consider how the different classes skills would relate to each other and what might attract players to each one. We had the luxury to make each class unique and experiment with different kinds of leveling experiences.

If, for example, one class is weak at low levels but extremely powerful at high levels, that class is attractive to players who want to invest a lot of time and resources into one character for a large return. Alternately, players who want to level quickly and try out different classes could avoid that class. That worked well for MapleStory because the games lack of structure didnt require classes to be comparable to each other, but rather only fun as an individual experience. Over time though, MMOs have changed, the community has changed, and MapleStory has had to change with it.

Adding Classes
As we added more content to Maple World, we began to notice changes in the way players chose classes. Strong preferences began to emerge for particular jobs while others became almost abandoned. We started to see more and more discussion in the community about which job was best for bossing, or which did the most damage-per-minute/second. As other MMOs changed the landscape, what players wanted out of their classes followed suit.

At first we were hesitant to make any changes to the Explorer classes, and instead attempted to fulfill the communitys needs by creating more classes. We tried classes with narrow focuses (Cygnus Knights), classes with action mechanics (Aran), and classes that went through job advancements in a different way (Evan). We even tried adding new jobs to existing classes (Dual Blade). While these new classes certainly brought more variety to the game, they also brought their own problems. Players of classic classes felt left behind while those that embraced the new classes felt that most of the game was not designed with them in mind.

Rethinking Classes

By the beginning of 2010 it was clear that we were going to have to make some serious changes. Big Bang was on the horizon and the addition of PvP was becoming more likely. Big Bang would change the leveling curve significantly and seemed like the perfect time to bring some unity to the classes so we did! The Big Bang class rebalance was a great start, but in truth you just cant balance classes on paper. Players will always find ways to surprise you and use skills in ways you havent thought of, and as soon as Big Bang was released in Korea, we knew that more class changes were imminent.

Indeed, in the run up to our Big Bang release there was serious discussion about whether we should hold back the Resistance classes until they were rebalanced. It was painfully obvious that the Resistance classes (especially the Mechanic) were overpowered. Ultimately we decided that waiting for the rebalance delaying their release for six months would not be worth it. The Resistance classes were too much fun and we really wanted Global players to have the chance to play them as soon as possible.

An Ongoing Job

With class balance becoming more and more important, as demonstrated by the release of PvP in Korean MapleStory, our decision to release the Resistance classes with Big Bang turned out be a good idea. We now have months of user data over and above what was available from Korea. As we continue to make changes, studying how real players use these rebalanced classes will remain invaluable.

With Chaos we are beginning another round of changes that will continue throughout 2011. With the release of Age of Heroes, we will significantly adjust Aran, Evan, and Dual Blades. Resistance and Cygnus classes will also undergo changes, with Bowmen, Magicians and Warriors following later this year. We hope that after these overhauls most classes wont see major changes for some time, but of course that cannot be set in stone. As MapleStory continues to move forward, the long-term health of the game and the continuing viability of every class have to take precedence over the disadvantages of short-term disruption.

For now, I hope you enjoy the return of the revamped Hero and Dual Blade classes later this week. I also hope that Mechanics everywhere eventually forgive us.

  1. Well, to people who did hope it was coming in the first Chaos patch, it might’ve felt like a big fat slap on their faces.

    • But they shouldn’t feel like that because Nexon never promised Nova in the first update. If anything they should be calling themselves idiots for assuming it would be Nova now. If I could figure out that it would likely be Chaos coming in Age of Heroes, then they could have too.

  2. Also, can you find information on the upcoming press conference Nexon Korea is supposed to have tomorrow?

  3. noooooo zach , I just noticed that on the GMS website, the digital clock is gone, now I have to use math in order to know what time it is in LA ( I know I live 9 hrs ahead but I don’t wanna do math). Normaly I would just check to see howmany hours I have left in till a patch arives 😥
ooh man I gotta train my balls of in Chaos. My evan has to get from 57 – 95, Dw 55-95 and I gotta make a high start DB (if htey get free mastery books) from 50-90

  4. LOL. Good luck with all that :). I’m planning to put up a clock that displays approximate server times on my blog in the next few days so keep posted for that.

Edit: Or you can just go to The BlockParty website for the server time.

  5. yeah but I gotta level those 3 chars in 1 month !
Then I gotta focus on the dark angelic ring.. Howlong does the event last that gives you the special items (like cygnus earring and DB mask), 1 month right ?

  6. InvestedPlayer

You need to consider that, when someone has investedy thousands of dollars on a character based on how it performs against other classes, you are really conducting a bait and switch when you follow a major increase (buffing) of that class with a major decrease (nerf). Bait and switch is a way that businesses can unethically lure a buyer in to purchase one item, and then take that offer away when they arrive and offer them something “comparable.” It is an advertising gimmick that is illegal by U.S. laws. The Pay-for-Premium model walks on a dangerous edge and businesses that follow that model would do well to avoid changes that drastically affect the value of player investment and virtual assets.

An unethical business could easily make offers that result in short-term excitement and profit, and constantly change things in ways that make the original investment worthless, requiring further investment. As an example, the bonus percent and penalty for elemental weapons for mages have been bounced back and forth repeatedly, as players who benefit threw money into gachapon to obtain the weapons, then dumped them at a loss. As another example, players have cubed current items to unique and 15% or higher main stat, often costing hundreds of dollars per item, with a full set costing thousands. If new weapons or synthesis make these characters go from what you considered overpowered to useless, you have stolen money from players. If you did not want players producing a Night Lord, e.g., with 400% normal LUK, you should not have introduced item potential. Conversely, introducing item potential in the first place made existing 7-scroll items worthless the first day cubes showed up in the Cash Shop.

If you want to be seen as responsible toward children and interested in players over profit, you should think through your upcoming plans in light of the ethical implications.

What you say is that : Since people spend money on something, Nexon isn’t allowed to change the thing they spend money on to a worse state then before. This is absolute Bullcr@p.
1st. that means that Nexon will never be allowed to remove, alter or add content that would worsen stats. Wich means people will always be stuck with what they have now, since there are no better equips available wich makes the current equips useless. This gets ppl frustrated for the lack of new equips. Nexon isn’t allowed to invent new equips because this would make the other equips useless. People have spend real money on almost EVERY single equip ever released in maplestory (yes, some ppl really buy useless equips with real money, just for fun).
    2. In the terms of usage, Nexon probly put in the fact that they aren’t responsible for any money loss you get from this game.
    3. Any money you spend on the game is bceause YOU want it, not because Nexon made you do it. This means Nexon isn’t responsible because they are just saying : “we have some good you CAN buy if you want, but if you don’t want to buy it, it’s no real big deal”.

    • InvestedPlayer

I in no way indicated that Nexon cannot make reasonable changes to correct errors, oversights, or imbalance to new classes. My post was to implore Nexon to act responsibly and ethically toward its customers as it makes changes, because they invest a considerable amount of money and have reasonable expectations for obtaining the goods they purchased in good faith. Your response could be interpreted to say that all businesses have a right to do what they want just by putting it in the fine print. Not so. So when you buy a car, if it’s a lemon, buyer beware? If you rush to the next town for a great deal on a popular video game, when you arrive to find the ad was misleading, instead for a cheap similarly-named rip-off game, it’s okay that you wasted the time and gas to get there? Worse, if you sent your mom and she bought the wrong game not knowing it was a rip-off, you can’t return it to get a refund? Business DO have ethical and legal responsibilities to their customers, and unrestrained capitalism is not supported by U.S. law. Some states, such as California, go even further to protect consumers from unethical or untruthful business practices.

  8. maplefreak26 :
Also, can you find information on the upcoming press conference Nexon Korea is supposed to have tomorrow?

I just came, here is the info on the new korea press conference, 3 “new” jobs
    1. canon shooter
    2. Mercedes (unicorn riding archer hero, design character is female)
    3. Demon slayer, resistance warrior, used to work for Black wings but joined the resistance.
Instead of Mana he uses Demon force, wich he gets from attacking monsters.

I LOVE the demon slayer, but then again he looks kinda gimicky, kinda, the standard RPG shadow/dark user.
The unicorn elf .. hmm yeah … no offence to gay people, but I don’t see myself saying to my friends : “yeah I play mapelstory, It’s cool because I can ride a Unicorn and shoot some arrows”.
Cannon shooter …. Nexon just killed the cannon shooter class, he wasn’t populair to start with, and now they announce 2 more awsome jobs. Yeah, the cannon shooter is going to be a rare one.
